The museum's art studio “Me and Art” invites children of preschool and primary school age to get to know works of art from different periods and to become better familiar with the language of art.

In the early 20th century, modernist artists fundamentally changed the way art was viewed and thought about. They moved away from realistic depictions and began experimenting with color, form, and composition. Art began to reflect more emotion, mood, and a personal perspective on the world. Modernists discovered that art could be not only about what we see, but also about what we feel and think.

During this lesson, we will explore various art styles and forms of expression. We’ll take a look at the historical period in which the modernists were active, assessing how social changes and significant events influenced the development of art. We will explore the human figure, portraiture, still life, and more complex themes, such as the depiction of war in art.

This time, we’ll learn more about the Riga Artists’ Group, its members, and the movements they represented. We’ll create works inspired by their legacy, freely experimenting and challenging our creative thinking and visual perception.

The workshop will be led by museum educator and artist Diāna Dimza-Dimme.

Please bring oil pastels, a regular pencil, and an eraser.

The activity is available in Latvian and English.
